Please read before believing any salary figure
- Salary is paid only for the months you are onboard. Example: a 6-month contract followed by 3 months of leave is normal, so annual income is not simply monthly pay × 12.
- Food, accommodation, medical cover and travel to and from the ship are provided by the company while you are on contract.
- Income tax depends on your NRI status and days spent outside India — confirm with a chartered accountant.
- Promotion depends on sea time plus clearing Certificate of Competency (CoC) examinations. It is not automatic.
Before you pay anyone
Six questions to ask any institute.
Send us any offer your child receives. We will help you verify it — free, whether or not you are our student.
Any pre-sea training institute must be approved by the Directorate General of Shipping. Verify it yourself on dgshipping.gov.in — do not accept a certificate photo as proof.
No legitimate shipping company charges a fee for a sponsorship offer. If money is being asked for a "guaranteed" sponsorship, it is a fraud. Walk away and report it.
Unaided 6/6 vision and normal colour vision are required for the Deck routes. Get this checked at a proper clinic before spending on coaching for a route that may be closed.
Coaching is a small part. Course fees, medicals, documentation, travel and living costs add up. Ask for the total before you commit.
Ask every institute this question directly. A serious one will have an honest answer about repeat attempts and alternative routes. An unserious one will change the subject.
Agents and marketing staff sell courses. Serving officers tell you what the job is. Insist on speaking to the second kind before you decide.

Modern commercial shipping is a heavily regulated, safety-driven industry with international standards, mandatory training and strict procedures. It is not risk-free — no career at sea is — but the picture of danger most families carry is decades out of date. We will talk you through the real risks honestly.
A typical contract is 3 to 6 months onboard followed by leave at home. Cadets often sign longer first contracts because sea time is what qualifies them. This is the single hardest part of the career and you should discuss it as a family before deciding.
It depends entirely on the route. A sponsored DNS can cost a fraction of an unsponsored B.Tech Marine Engineering degree. We map out the realistic total cost — coaching, course fees, medicals, documents and travel — during counselling, before you commit to anything.
