Frequently asked questions

30 straight answers, including the inconvenient ones.

Everything students and parents ask us — about the career, the exam, the medicals, the money and us.

Merchant Navy career

The Indian Navy is a defence force. The Merchant Navy is a commercial industry — cargo ships, tankers, container vessels and car carriers moving goods for shipping companies. There is no combat role, no defence selection process, and you are employed by a company rather than the armed forces.

It depends on three things: your eyesight, your PCM marks and how soon you need to start earning. DNS is the fastest route (1 year plus sea time) but demands unaided 6/6 vision. B.Sc. Nautical is the same career with a degree over 3 years. B.Tech Marine Engineering takes 4 years but has a far more relaxed vision standard, so it is often the right answer for students who wear spectacles. This is exactly what a counselling session is for.

Very likely yes — through the Engine department. B.Tech Marine Engineering and GME accept corrected vision with spectacles in most cases. The Deck routes (DNS, B.Sc. Nautical) are the ones that generally require unaided 6/6 vision. Get a proper eye test done before you choose a route.

For the Deck department, yes — normal colour vision on the Ishihara test is required and there is no relaxation, because navigation depends on identifying coloured lights and signals. For engineering roles the standard is significantly more relaxed and is assessed by the approved medical examiner.

Yes. Women sail as Deck Officers, Marine Engineers and ETOs, and several companies run dedicated women cadet courses. The eligibility, exam and medical standards are the same, and women also get an additional two years of age relaxation. The main practical considerations are the same ones every seafarer faces — long contracts and time away from home.

Entry is generally between 17 and 25 years. Women get an additional two years, so up to 27. Reserved categories get further relaxation as notified. You also need to be an Indian citizen. Age limits and relaxations are set by the Indian Maritime University and can change from one cycle to the next, so always confirm against the official notification for the year you are applying in.

Indicative monthly figures: a cadet or trainee engineer earns roughly ₹25,000–₹70,000; a junior officer after their first CoC roughly ₹1.5–3.5 lakh; and a Captain or Chief Engineer ₹8.5–20 lakh or more. But you are paid only for the months you are onboard, so annual income is not monthly pay multiplied by twelve. Figures vary widely by company, vessel type and route.

The only route immediately after Class 10 is a GP Rating course, which places you in the crew ranks rather than the officer ranks — a much lower salary ceiling and a long, difficult route to officer rank later. Our honest advice: if you can complete Class 12 with PCM, do that and enter as an officer.

IMU CET & preparation

The Common Entrance Test conducted by the Indian Maritime University for admission to its undergraduate maritime courses. It is a computer-based test of 200 multiple-choice questions in 180 minutes, at Class 11–12 standard, covering Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, English, General Aptitude and General Knowledge.

Yes — students do it every year. What they almost never do without support is clear the exam *and* handle sponsorship interviews, medical requirements, college selection and documentation correctly. If you are a disciplined self-studier, consider taking only the Mock Test Series and the Interview Mastery Course rather than a full course.

Class 11 is ideal, Class 12 is normal, and after 12th as a repeater is still workable. Our session runs October to May precisely so that a Class 12 student can prepare alongside boards and be ready for the exam window.

Negative marking has been applied in recent cycles, but the exact scheme is confirmed in the official notification each year. Our mock tests are run with negative marking on, because it is far better to build a cautious attempt strategy and not need it than the reverse. Always check the current year's official IMU notification.

Consistently and early. These sections are the cheapest marks in the paper and the ones most students ignore until the last month. Weekly English, GK and Aptitude sessions are built into the Preparation Booster and Fulltime course for exactly this reason.

Yes, and repeaters are some of our strongest students because they already know where they went wrong. Talk to us at counselling — most repeaters are best served by IMU CET Fulltime or the Preparation Booster, depending on whether the gap was in the syllabus or in strategy.

Sponsorship & placement

A sponsorship is a commitment by a shipping company to take you as a cadet, support your training and give you the sea time you need to qualify. For DNS in particular it is close to essential — a DNS diploma with no sponsoring company can leave you with no route onto a ship.

No. Sponsorship is decided by the shipping company, on their own tests, interviews and medicals. Any institute that guarantees you a sponsorship is either misleading you or charging you for something they do not control. What we guarantee is preparation, honest guidance and mentors who have been through those panels.

Companies that run cadet courses in India include Anglo-Eastern, Synergy, Fleet Management, V.Ships, Maersk, MSC, Great Eastern Shipping, BSM, Wallem, Scorpio, EPS and others. Each runs its own process and calendar. We track these and prepare you company by company.

Three rules. One: no legitimate shipping company charges you a fee for a sponsorship offer. Two: verify every institute's DG Shipping approval on dgshipping.gov.in before paying anything. Three: if the offer is guaranteed, urgent and requires cash, it is a fraud. We will help you verify any offer you receive, free of charge, whether or not you are our student.

Courses, fees & admission

Book a counselling session and we will tell you — including if the answer is "just the mock test series" or "nothing yet, finish your boards first". Broadly: Mock Test Series for practice, Interview Mastery for selection skills, Preparation Booster for everything around the exam, and IMU CET Fulltime if you need the syllabus taught five days a week.

A one-to-one session with serving mariners, with your parents present if you want. We review your marks, eyesight, finances and goals, and give you an honest recommendation — which may well be that you do not need to buy anything from us. The small fee exists to make sure the slots go to serious students.

Yes. The Preparation Booster is offered at ₹8,400 instead of ₹14,000, and the IMU CET Fulltime course at ₹45,000 instead of ₹75,000. This discount is only for the first 50 students of our founding course. After those seats fill, the price returns to the full fee.

Payment is currently by UPI. The QR code and UPI ID are shown on the booking page — pay, then send the screenshot on WhatsApp to +91 96362 63149 with your full name. Our team confirms and calls you within 24 hours.

A passport-size photograph, your Class 10 marksheet, your Class 12 marksheet if available, your Aadhaar card, your IMU CET admit card or rank certificate if you have one, and your passport if you already hold one. Email them to [email protected] after submitting the admission form.

Live online, so students from Jaipur, across Rajasthan and anywhere in India can attend the same batch with the same mentors and expert faculty.

Instalment options are available on the higher-value courses. Discuss it during counselling or on WhatsApp before enrolling.

The counselling fee is non-refundable once the session has been conducted. Course fees follow the published refund policy — read it before you pay, and ask us anything that is not clear.

For parents

Modern commercial shipping is a heavily regulated, safety-driven industry with international standards, mandatory training and strict procedures. It is not risk-free — no career at sea is — but the picture of danger most families carry is decades out of date. We will talk you through the real risks honestly.

A typical contract is 3 to 6 months onboard followed by leave at home. Cadets often sign longer first contracts because sea time is what qualifies them. This is the single hardest part of the career and you should discuss it as a family before deciding.

It depends entirely on the route. A sponsored DNS can cost a fraction of an unsponsored B.Tech Marine Engineering degree. We map out the realistic total cost — coaching, course fees, medicals, documents and travel — during counselling, before you commit to anything.

Please do. The sessions where a parent is present are consistently the most useful ones. Bring your questions and your scepticism.

The best answers come from a real conversation.

A ₹150 counselling session answers all of this against your own marksheet, your own eye test and your own budget — not against a general FAQ.
